Fully Automated Luxury Communism: What AI Could Mean For The Future

A recent article in WIRED magazine by Kevin Kelly titled "Fully Automated Luxury Communism" explores how artificial intelligence (AI) could enable a future in which everyone has what they need and wants, and work is optional. This future of plenty is often called Fully Automated Luxury Communism (FALC). As Kelly notes, the term was first coined by Aaron Bastani, a co-founder of the UK media organization Novara Media, in a book by the same name.

While some might find the name off-putting, Kelly argues that we should not be afraid of the term communism, as it has been distorted by the 20th century. Instead, we should embrace it as a way to describe a future in which technology provides us with abundance, and we are free to live lives of creativity, leisure, and fulfillment.

This future is not as far-fetched as it might sound. As Kelly points out, we are already seeing hints of it in the world around us. For example, many people no longer commute to work, thanks to telecommuting and other technological advances. And, as AI continues to evolve, it is likely that even more jobs will be automated, leaving humans free to pursue their passions.

Of course, there are challenges to this future, including the risk of mass unemployment and the need to ensure that everyone has access to the basic necessities of life. But, as Kelly argues, these challenges are not insurmountable. And, if we can overcome them, AI could enable a future in which everyone can lead a fulfilling life of leisure and creative pursuits.
