In The Martian, an AI system known as "The Watney" assists an astronaut in his efforts to survive on the red planet. In The Terminator, an AI system called "Skynet" becomes self-aware and tries to exterminate humanity. And in The Matrix, an AI system called "The Matrix" enslaves humanity in a virtual reality world.

These are just Hollywood examples, of course. But they offer a window into how some people view artificial intelligence (AI) – as either a powerful tool that can help us achieve great things or a dangerous tool that could one day turn against us.

AI is often described as a "double-edged sword." On the one hand, it has the potential to help us solve some of the most complex problems we face as a species. On the other hand, it also has the potential to create new problems – or even exacerbate existing problems.

For example, AI could be used to develop more effective treatments for diseases. But it could also be used to create more sophisticated weapons. AI could be used to help us better understand and protect our environment. But it could also be used to create more realistic and convincing fake news.
